Cultural Trip is a series of community-based traveling program initiated by GELAR since 2007. This community development program is especially created for those who enjoy unique authentic cultural activities, particularly rarely seen performing arts, endangered cultures, rituals and closer connections with local communities in different parts of Indonesia – right in its origin, performed by native communities.

The idea came out from the challenging facts in staging authentic traditional performing arts to urban audience. Most of these performing arts were staged in a proscenium stage which were common in performing art venues today. Inevitably, many forms of Indonesian traditional performing arts would lost its meanings and become alienated from its cultural context when taken out from its original environment. Staging these indigenous traditional performing arts would require site-specific venue uniquely suitable for each performance. Why not in its original place as well?

GELAR Cultural Trip series adopts the concept of sustainable tourism that sustains or enhances the geographical character of a place - its environment, heritage, aesthetics, culture, and the well-being of its residents (Geotourism Study, 2002). This program is supported by several leading media such as National Geographic Traveler, Digital Camera, Media Indonesia, Tamasya Magazine, Suara Pembaruan, Jakarta Globe, Kompas and Female Radio.
