  • Blacius Subono’s Karna Tanding

Production management for international touring of “Karna Tanding” - a collaboration of wayang, music and choreography led by Blacius Subono. Performed at The Royal Tropical Museum Amsterdam, Netherlands and Festival Musica de Populi in Florence, Italy.

  • Tembang Sunda Ida Widawati

In association with Anmaro Performing Arts - Europe, Gelar supports international touring for traditional Sundanese music group led by Ida Widawati, in International Music Festival in Netherlands. Performed at Amsterdam and Utrecht, Netherlands, Antwerp and Brussels, Belgium.

  • Saidjah en Adinda

In association with Anmaro Performing Arts – Europe for World Music and Theatre Festival, Gelar supports international touring and production management in Indonesia. Featuring some of the prominent Indonesian traditional performing artists such as Miroto, S. Kardjono, Susilo and Blacius Subono. Performance in Netherlands have been responded enthusiastically by public. Performed at Amstelveen, Amsterdam, Antwerpen, Breda, Denbosch, Denhaag, Drachten, Eindhoven, Enschede, Hasselt, Goes, Hoorn, Leeuwarden, Leiden, Maastricht, Middelburg, Rotterdam, Sittard, Tilburg, Utrecht, Zaandam.

  • Topeng Indramayu Mimi Rasinah

Gelar in association with Asian Music Circuit (AMC) - England, have toured the legendary Indramayu traditional mask dance master, Rasinah (77), in several cities in England including London, Bristol, Devon, and Glasgow. These performances have been responded enthusiastically by the communities. Performances were followed with workshops and discussions.

  • Semata Wayang featuring Wayang Ukur & Wayang Sandosa

“Semata Wayang” is a production which features avant-garde wayang (shadow puppetry) performances, Wayang Ukur and Wayang Sandosa. Wayang Ukur was created by Ki Sukasman, a shadow puppet designer, who has spent most of his life designing shadow puppets in Yogyakarta, Java. His concept is unique for its wayang design and lighting design. Wayang Ukur collaborates shadow puppets with dancers, multi puppeteers (dalang), multi screens, and an excellent visual arts in all aspects. Wayang Sandosa is a creation of several dalang (shadow puppeteers) of Academy of Performing Arts (ISI) in Surakarta, Central Java. Its uniqueness lies in the collaboration of many puppeteers in performing the show. With a giant screen, these dalangs performs attractively by standing up, playing different characters.

  • Four Hand Concert - 2002

Indonesian classical pianist Ary Sutedja and Japanese pianist Miwako Fukuchi performed Tchaikovsky’s  “Sleeping Beauty” in collaboration with traditional wayang, performed by Nanang Hape, one of the young and talented shadow puppeteers in Jakarta. The story was visualized through shadow puppets.

  • Mozart Concert - 2003

Featuring Tembang Tengahan by Bina Musika Ensemble

Bina Musika is one of the pioneering music school in Indonesia. Originally owned by the government, Bina Musika has branches throughout Indonesia. The Ministry for Culture and Tourism decided to hand over Bina Musika to private sector to be managed professionally. As consultant for Bina Musika, Gelar designed its program planning.

  • Saat-Saat Berbagi - 2003

Commemorating the National Children’s Day 2003, Bina Musika held a children concert entitled “Saat-saat Berbagi” (the Moments of Sharing), paying tribute to the great Indonesian children song composers such as AT. Mahmud, Ibu Soed,  pak Kasoer. All compositions were played by the children orchestra. This program was aired on TV7.

  • Daeng Udjo Angklung Concert

Gelar was assigned to produce the entertainment program which represents Indonesia. To implement the program, Gelar presented a blend of traditional and modern music Angklung Orchestra of the legendary Mang Udjo were combined with Elfa’s Children Choir. These program brought tremendous excitement from the entrepreneurs and CEOs of attending companies. To celebrate the achievements of entrepreneurs, Ernst & Young in 1986 launched The Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year (EOY) Program in the United States. The program has now become truly global and is held in over 30 countries across five continents. EOY is recognized as among the most prestigious business achievement awards.

  • Retrospeksi IwanTirta (RIT) I – 2004

Iwan Tirta, leading batik designer in Indonesia, displayed his antique private collections of classical batiks. Intead of using models to display his collection, nine classical Javanese dancers performed the Bedhaya Pangkur (staged by Sulistyo Tirtokusumo), one of Keraton Surakarta’s royal court-dance, using the dress that Iwan Tirta had reconstructed according to the original costume design during the reign of King Pakubuwono VIII in the 18th century. William Wongso, expert in Indonesian gastronomy, had served the Javanese royal court recipes during the colonial era, as a feast to all the guests. The Pakubuwono Residence is a property company which has tremendous concerns in preserving Indonesian arts and culture.

  • Krakatau Concert at EOY - 2004

Gelar was assigned to produce the entertainment program which represents Indonesia. To meet these standards, Gelar recommend highly reputable Indonesian artists whose major achievement have made prominent contribution to Indonesia both in national and international level. Krakatau, one of the most prominent music group, brought a progressive and unique sound that produced by traditional Sundanese gamelan and high tech electronic instruments.

  • NERA in Concert - 2005

Nera is one amongst Indonesian pop group bands which explores creative approaches to present their music to younger, new listeners. Nera’s uniqueness lies upon in its lyrics, which uses Floresese (east Indonesia) as its main language. Presented in a very popular way, Nera’s musical concept has been influenced by the rich percussive traditions of Indonesia. Gilang Ramadhan, Indonesia’s most prominent drummer and percussionist - founder of the group – has studied percussive traditions throughout Indonesia. One of his ambition is to popularize music that are rooted from local traditions to younger generations. Nera are Gilang Ramadhan (drums/percussions), Donny Suhendra (electric guitar), Krisna Prameswara (keyboards), Adi Darmawan (bass), and Ivan Nestorman (vocal).

  • Djimat meet Gunarsa - 2005

Bisnis Indonesia celebrated its 20th anniversary with a presentation of Topeng Pajegan (traditional mask dance) of Bali performed by the most prominent mask dancer, I Made Djimat. The maestro was accompanied by I Gusti Kompyang Raka of LKB Saraswati as music director. In this special occasion, a painting auction by the maestro painter Nyoman Gunarsa was held as a donation for the Bali bombing victims October 2005.

  • Gelar Wayang Kebangsaan - 2006

The National Secretariat of Wayang Indonesia commisioned to program Gelar Wayang Kebangsaan which was held simultaneously with the closing night of the SENA WANGI congress in 2006. On this occasion Ki dalang Enthus Susmono performed shadow puppet play taken from Mahabharata epic.

  • Ki Manteb at Nusantara Heritage - 2006

Nusantara Heritage is a special event held at Dharmawangsa Hotel, consist of night market and shadow puppet performance. A variety of Javanese culinary delights were served for all the guests. In this occasion, Ki Manteb Soedharsono performed ‘Dewa Ruci’, in 60 minutes duration.

The tradition dates back as far as the tenth century when it originated in the Red River delta area of northern Vietnam. The puppets are built out of wood and the shows are performed in a waist-deep pool. A large rod supports the puppet under the water and is used by the puppeteers to control them. Gelar was appointed by National Secretariat for Wayang Indonesia to develop a program featuring this puppet art.

  • Tandhing Gendhing – 2006, 2007 & 2008

"Tandhing Gendhing", or "A Battle of Wits" - is performed in "Iwan Tirta in Retrospect II" at Dharmawangsa Hotel. The work of classical Javanese dance opera is directed by Wasi Bantolo as choreographer, while the composition of music and libretto is done by karawitan maestro and puppeteer, Blacius Subono, artistic arrangement was done directly by the late batik maestro Iwan Tirta, assisted by Haryono Haryo Guritno, KRAy. Maktal Dirdjodiningrat, KRT. Hartoyo and Kumoratih Kushardjanto. This performance was derived from the concept of classical Javanese musical or langendriyan opera that brought the contemporary re-interpretation of the epic Mahabharata, specifically Bharatayudha. All dancers are also vocalists. The dance movements was of Surakarta style ornamented with symbolic values through its dance movements. The main artistic element in this opera was the costumes mainly the batik. Tandhing Gendhing had been setting new trend among the upper class Jakarta whereas for the first time, a classic traditional opera was sold out with a ticket price of Rp. 1,000,000,- per person.

    • Premiere Tandhing Gendhing dan Srimpi Anglir Mendhung – 2006: After 3 years of preparation, the premiere presentation was at Grand Ballroom Dharmawangsa Hotel. This stage was opened with the appearance of Srimpi Anglir Mendhung.
    • Tandhing Gendhing Tour – 2007 feat. Srimpi Moncar at Solo: Presented at Teater Kecil ISI, Surakarta. This classical opera featured Srimpi Moncar created by KGPAA Mangkunegoro VII as an opening act.
    • Tandhing Gendhing Tour – 2007 feat. Srimpi Ludiro Madu at Surabaya: Presented at Gedung Teater Cak Durasim, Surabaya. This classical opera featured Srimpi Ludiramadu created by Pakubuwono as an opening act.
    • Tandhing Gendhing Tour – 2007 feat. Srimpi Tameng Gito at Jakarta: Presented at Graha Bhakti Budaya, Jakarta. This classical opera featured Srimpi Tameng Gito created by Pakubuwono as an opening act.
    • Tandhing Gendhing Tour – 2007 feat. Bedhaya Rimbe at Cirebon: In Cirebon, Tandhing Gendhing featured a special appearance from the dancers of Kanoman Cirebon who brought the excerpt of Bedhaya Rimbe Prang Panah. This Bedhaya is a contemplative court-dance repertoire originally three hours long. This dance is rarely performed outside the Kanoman palace. It was last performed in 1968 at Taman Ismail Marzuki Jakarta.
    • Tandhing Gendhing Tour – 2007 at Pekalongan: Tandhing Gendhing appearance in Pekalongan is part of Pekalongan Batik Party 2007 held in an antique house, Rumah Jawatan Kota Pekalongan.
    • Tandhing Gendhing Tour – 2008 at Griya Jenggala, Jakarta: Griya Jenggala ends the entire tour series of Tandhing Gendhing.
  • Manteb Meet Nartosabdho - 2007

Another phenomenal stage where two masters of shadow puppetry meet in one stage. Ki Manteb Soedharsono is a disciple of the late Ki Nartosabdho. Both are maestros of Indonesian performing arts particularly in wayang puppetry. Ki Narto Sabdho who had died long ago was remarkably revived by Manteb Soedharsono on stage at Gedung Kesenian Jakarta.

  • Santiswaran Concert at Jenggala – 2007

Santiswaran may be defined as a Javanese cultural product inspired by Islam. The old term of this kind of music, gendhing terbangan is derived from the dominant instrument which is frame-drum (terbang / rebana). Santiswaran was developed by artist of Surakarta Palace at Central java during the reign of Pakubuwono IV and Pakubuwono V. On October 2007, for the first time in Jakarta, Santiswaran troupe led by Waluyo Sastrosukarno, was staged in a limited audience at Griya Jenggala.

  • The Mask By The Maestro - 2008

One of endangered traditional dances in Indonesia is the Mask Dance. Three of the oldest mask dances of Indonesia are Kedok Tiga (Betawi), Pajegan (Bali) and Kelana (Java). Mask dances were chosen to be performed at Bimasena as these dances are slowly dissapearing, even in the region of origin, and need regeneration for it to become of interest again for the younger generation. Part of the proceeds of performance will be submitted to support dance institute of these particular dances to be attractive for young dancers. At this program, guest will be invited to taste culinary specialties from Betawi, Bali and Java, the regions where these mask dances originate from.

        • Topeng Kedok Tiga & Topeng Jantuk: Mask performance in native Betawi traditional performing arts consists of dancing, musical aspect and visual arts. The mask dancer would perform three characters symbolized by the masks accompanied by traditional musical instruments such as rebab, kecrek, kulanter, ketuk, gendang, gong, bende, as well as vocalists. This mask dance were popularly known as “Topeng Cisalak”, which originated in Depok, a suburb of Jakarta, around 1918 by its masters: Djioen and Mak Inang. Its uniqueness lies upon the cultural influences of Chinese and Sundanese traditions. Today, Topeng Betawi is considered highly rare and nearly in its extinction. Re-generation of Topeng Betawi dancers has been very poor, since lack of government support. Topeng Kedok Tiga Betawi is performed by Kartini, the only surviving traditional Betawi mask dancer in Jakarta.
        • Topeng Klono Sewandono: Throughout Java, there are many versions of “Topeng Klana” mask dance which was derived from the Panji tales. From aristocratic to grass-root societies, Topeng Klana has been very popular. From Yogyakarta, Mangkunegaran and Kasunanan Palace court-style, to proletarian styles of east Java such as Topeng Jabung Malang, and Reog Ponorogo. The “Topeng Klana” mask dance that will be performed at the Bimasena Club is of Yogyakarta Palace style, in which considered as highly rare and almost in extinction. However, Yogyakarta style of Topeng Klana is considered to be one of the most in its authenticity among others. At the Bimasena Club, the Topeng Klana dance had been re-composed by the performing arts maestro, Bagong Kussudiarjo. Topeng Wayang Klana at the Bimasena Club will be performed by Lantip Kuswala Daya, one of prominent mask dancer in Yogyakarta, who has learned Yogyakarta dance style directly from the late maestro, RM Sasminta.
        • Topeng Pajegan: Mask as a form of art expression has been popularly used in traditional Balinese culture through its performing arts. The existence of this mask dance is highly-related to Hinduism religious rites which blends harmoniously in the society. “Topeng Pajegan” is a unique mask performing arts which requires the most qualities from its performer. No ordinary mask dancer could perform this type of mask performance. “Topeng Pajegan” is performed by a single mask dancer which has excellent abilities to dance and act. The dancer performs five characteristics symbolizes by each mask, representing the cycle of life. Topeng Pajegan at the Bimasena Club will be performed by I Made Djimat, a mask dance maestro, the only son of Ni Ketut Cenik, the late Balinese maestro dancer of Joged Pingitan.
  • Tribute to Ismail Marzuki - 2009

Ismail Marzuki is an all time favorite and one of the most productive Indonesian composers. His compositions have become Indonesian classics and played from generations to generations. During the colonial war, Ismail Marzuki played an important role through his patriotic songs. Until then, he had composed more than 200 popular compositions for various genres of music. Artists involved in this Tribute concert are Tohpati Big Band, Kris Biantoro, Gatot Sunjoto, Andien, Baim, Rieka Roslan, Rio Febrian and Farah Di.

  • Ngadi Busana - 2009

The relationship between Batik and Dance can not be separated from one another. In the Javanese arts even more so. Batik is not merely a costume that will embellish a choreography. But more than that, it became a soul in every form of dance. In order to open the exhibition Adi Wastraprema 2009, the process of wearing a the royal cloth was exhibited by a classical Javanese clothing experts.

  • Gendari – (Jakarta & Solo) 2009

“Gendari” is one of the major works of Elly D. Luthan as choreographer. This work received a warm welcome from the public art and cultural media at the time. This work is partially danced by non-professional dancers and supported by professional dancers and musicians including the court-dance expert Sulistyo Tirtokusumo and national actor Slamet Rahardjo. Supported by Blacius Subono as composer and Dedy Luthan as artistic director. Gendari at that time was performed at Gedung Kesenian Jakarta, and two months later danced at the Grand Theater of ISI Solo in a series of Dies Natalis ISI Solo.

  • Didi AGP 999 Meditation Concert - 2009

For the first time a meditation music concert was held. This production is driven by electronic musician Didi AGP who is now intensely researching sounds, vibrations and frequencies for meditation and healing purposes through music. In its appearance, Didi AGP combines sounds produced from digital music instruments with various instruments of tradition such as gender, rebab, rindik, kendang, saluang, serunai, bansi and so on. Didi AGP also features Epi Martison, Nanang Hape, Ammir AGP and Yuyun. This performance was held at Teater Salihara.

  • 25 Juta Honda Launching  - 2009

Commemorating its 25,000,000th production, Astra Honda Motor held an exposure and launch of 25,000,000 Honda Vario at its factory in Cikarang. Gelar were assigned to develop a program in Cikarang factory that mobilize at least 100 factory workers to make an opening dance, a dance taking the idioms of Aceh, Sunda and Minangkabau and then accompanying motorcycle products to 25,000,000 in the factory.

  • The Mask 2009 - 2009

In association with Bimasena Mine and Energy Society, Gelar showcases the art of endangered mask traditions.

        • Topeng Priangan: Priangan mask dance originated from West Java. Technically this mask art is only developed on the campus of ISI Bandung for conservation, Risyani Nurjaman is one of the researchers who conduct continuous research related to Topeng Priangan.
        • Topeng Hudoq: There are two types of Hudoq Mask located in the Dayak tribe, Kalimantan. First is Hudoq dance which until now developed in the Dayak Benuaq tribe. This dance is still used for the purposes of various events and traditional ceremonies. The second is Hudoq Kita dance from the Dayak Kenyah tribe. Hudoq Kita practically have never been danced again because this dance is very dependent on the existence of forests.
  • Didi AGP 12:12 Concert at BBJ - 2009

As a continuation on his previous success, Didi AGP performed a meditation music concert in Bentara Budaya Jakarta. In addition to the musicians who have supported before, Didi AGP also featured poetries that come from prayer text from various religions.

  • Ananda Sukarlan LIBERTAS Concert - 2010

In collaboration with Yayasan Musik Sastra Indonesia, Gelar held a classical music concert hosted by an Indonesian pianist, Ananda Sukarlan. In this production are Ananda Sukarlan, Aning Katamsi, Joseph Kristanto, Indra Listyanto, Jakarta String Ensemble, Elizabeth Ashford, ITB Choir, Paragita UI Choir and dancers from choreographer Chendra Panatan. This performance took place at Graha Bhakti Budaya TIM.

  • Paregreg - 2010

Paregreg is inspired from the late history of Majapahit. The work of Elly D. Luthan (choreographer) and Joko W. Porong (composer), was performed by Paguyuban Pencinta Seni Jawa Timuran, a community which supports endangered performing arts such as ludruk.

  • Boma - 2010

Gelar produced a theaterplay which re-interpret Mahabharata epic within contemporary context. Featuring Blacius Subono, Elly Luthan and Sulistyo Tirtokusumo, this production tells the story of a king named Bomanarakasura. This production is done in cooperation with Kusuma Budaya Foundation to support the education of homeless children. Boma was performed twice in Gedung Kesenian Jakarta and Gedung Kautaman Jakarta Theater.

  • Wayang Betawi at Pameran Wayang Bentara Budaya Jakarta - 2010

Bentara Budaya Jakarta in 2011 held an exhibition showing its wayang collections to the public. Gelar supported the wayang performances during the exhibition. Ki Dalang Sukar Pulung is a puppeteer who performs shadow puppet performances in eastern Jakarta area. Wayang Betawi itself is very unique. Appearing later at the time of the attack of Sultan Agung to Batavia, this puppet then grew up along with the growth of Betawi people in Jakarta. This puppet uses old Sundanese language, accompanied by Sundanese instruments and Gambang Kromong. It uses Javanese-style shadow puppets.

  • Ki Dwi Adi Nugroho & Ki Manteb Soedahrsono at Pameran Wayang Bentara Budaya Jakarta - 2010

Wayang Kulit Surakarta style is very popular in Java society. Especially in urban areas such as Jakarta, the presence of Surakarta style shadow puppet performance can cure their love and longing for their hometown. On this occasion, two shadow puppet performance were presented by Ki Dwi Adi Nugroho in short duration. Meanwhile, the maestro Ki Manteb Soedharsono performed all-night long duration.

  • The Mask 2010

In its third year, Gelar with Bimasena Mines and Energy Society brought endangered mask traditions to an exclusive public in Jakarta. Deddy Luthan was again appointed as the curator of the program and chose two very exotic mask art.

    • Toping Toping Simalungun: Toping-Toping is a mask tradition that is usually performed to entertain a family who is mourning for death. Anton Sitepu and the Simalungun community brought this endangered mask dance to Jakarta.
    • Topeng Madura: Madura mask is usually performed along with the commemoration of harvest period. Mask art that brings the story of Mahabharata is usually held all night long in the form of theater show.
  • Didi AGP 11:11:11 - 2011

On November 11, Gelar produced an electronic music concert featuring two highly influential electronic musicians, Didi AGP and Andy Ayunir. The concert featured various numbers of electronic music works showcased under the stars of the Planetarium Jakarta.

  • Kunokini Reinkarnasi Concert - 2011

Kunokini is one among few music groups that explores typical percussive sounds of Indonesia. Based on their first album titled Reincarnation, Kunokini performed in a concert held at Gedung Kesenian Jakarta.

  • Pendekar Kelana - 2011

Pendekar Kelana is a non-verbal theater which attractions are taken from the techniques / moves from martial arts of Merpati Putih style. The main course of this performance is the demonstration of power in the style of Merpati Putih. The choreography also played an important role in this performance, in which the moves and techniques will be 'moved' within the composition of motion - on a traditional basis, which takes the essence of motion from martial art moves. Director and choreography by Atin Kisam, assisted by Yuli Bhimawan and Wiwiek HW. The composition of urban music was composed by Joko W. Porong. This stage is a comedy involving large audience.

  • Malahayati - 2012

This performance is especially designed with a theme of Aceh. Its form was inspired by Seudati, Rampai Aceh, Ratoh, Didong, and its literary traditions. This performance is choreographed by Suryani, music by Armen, guest stars present in this performance are Gerry Puraatmadja and Ayudia Bing Slamet.

  • Knights of the Golden Empress - 2013

"Knights of the Golden Empress" - premiered on July 4, 2013. Along with the performing arts program, the kingdom-style banquet program of the island of Java. In this program, the production of "Knights of the Golden Empress" is also directed by choreographer Elly D. Luthan, while the musical compositions and libretto are also performed by karawitan maestro, Rahayu Supanggah. This production at that time using the costumes provided by Iwan Tirta Private Collection. 

  • Ketoprak Keris Nagasasra - 2014

Nogososro & Sabuk Inten is a classic Javanese silat story written by SH Mintardja in the form of a serial book. The richness of the storyline, many unique characters, as well as the closeness of this story to the history and myth of Java makes it famous among fans of martial arts. The story is then adapted into theatrical martial arts format based on ketoprak performances. A special choreography was made for both duel and mass action scenes. Music accompaniment is a composition produced from Javanese gamelan. In this performance, the performers will feature martial arts moves of Merpati Putih which will be performed through action fighting action, acrobatic action and strength attraction.

 

Audience Development

We invite our viewers to experience 'performing on-stage' with artists and traditional artists in a production. This experience will make them keep updated with the latest information related to the development of Indonesian performing arts. This audience development program is also a charity program that collaborates with several social institutions.

  1. Audience On-Stage

Starting in 2006, GELAR developed a program which involves the audience on a performing arts stage. The audience performance is one of the community-based performances featuring amateur art lovers as volunteers supporting the event. These volunteers were originally art-viewers with very diverse backgrounds - from private executives, professionals to high-ranking officials. Gelar offers an experience to these art-viewers to be on stage just like a show performed by professional artists as they usually see. They participate actively as dancers, musicians, or behind-the-scenes workers who help raise public appreciation to support the sustainability of traditional arts. This act is also a medium for charity to help others from supporting victims of natural disaster, donate to cure diseases, support education through foster-parents movements, etc. Although performed by amateurs, Gelar ensures the quality of performing arts production is well-maintained as a result of being supported by creators and professional art-workers who qualifies in the world of performing arts in Indonesia.

        • Sudhamala - 2006: Gelar was commissioned by the Mataram Heritage Foundation in association with Kusuma Budaya, to produce a Charity Night presenting the Wayang Wong theatre performed by the descendants of the 4 palaces in Java with a story about the rites to keep away from misfortunes (“Sudhamala”). The profit of this event were fully donated to support rehabilitation projects of Mataram heritage. Mataram Heritage Foundation was established as a response to the earthquake tragedy in Yogyakarta and Central Java in 2006. The main objective is to support the rehabilitation of Mataram heritage – which presently divided into Kasunanan Surakarta, Kasultanan Yogyakarta, Pura Mangkunegaran and Pura Pakualaman that were ruined because of the earthquake.
        • Damarwulan Menakjingga – 2007: Gelar assists Kusuma Budaya Foundation – an art & culture community, to produce a Charity Night (together with Thalassaemia Foundation) presenting a colossal dance theatre performance. The story was taken from the history of Majapahit Empire.
        • Pandawa Dadu – 2010: This performance is a community performance where Gelar supports ITB Alumni Forum class of 1973 (Fortuga). In this production Gelar took Ki Slamet Gundono and staged a collaboration in the form of Suket Wayang. The performance at the National Museum is part of Fortuga's anniversary event.
        • Ramayana 1 – 2011 & 2012: The dance theatre entitled Ramayana, is an event that explores traditional drama with a story taken from Ramayana epic manuscript. This production involved community players ranging from dancers, musicians to stage workers. They are a combination of several community of art enthusiasts, community college alumni, members and alumni dance studio, professional artists and of course the activists of karawitan art. From this diverse background opens the possibility to create a more open cultural show. The first stage of Ramayana took a form of wayang opera while the second time in 2012, Ramayana was presented in the form of ballet.
        • Baratayuda – 2015: This program is an activity of friends of Gelar community who has been involved in Gelar’s program since 2007. This event was aimed to introduce Indonesian cultural assets to younger generation while preserving, developing and maintaining the continuity of traditional arts . This play was directed by Bram Kushardjanto assisted by Yuli Bhimawan, Mochamad Wahyudi, Sentot Bambang Gunawan, Sentot Erwin and Rury Avianti. Music by Blacius Subono and the original script by Pitoyo Amrih.
        • Kridha Hambeksa – 2016: Kridha Hambeksa is a dance performance program that presents classical Javanese dance compositions. The program aims to provide space for creativity in traditional art and culture in order to survive in the urban life of Jakarta through a variety of fun activities. This event then inspired the establishment of an art community called Kridha Hambeksa.
  1. Inviting the audience to see live performances at its original place

Not every cultural performances and events can be brought to proscenium stage. Therefore, GELAR developed a program that brings the audience to enjoy authentic live performance at its place of origin. Indeed, this program became an exciting travel experience that connects the visitors with local communities through its performing arts to culinary traditions. Initiated in 2007, this program became a sustainable travel which later known as Cultural Trip Series.

  1. Children Program

In 2011, Gelar started to develop new program aiming at younger audience.

        • Ramayana 1 – 2011 dan Ramayana 2 – 2012: In 2011, this performance involves 150 students of elementary school students, in addition to the older dancers. This performance is also a charity show, where 30% of the proceeds were donated to the education of elementary school children through Foster Parents National Movement. In 2012, this Ramayana stage is repeated again and received remarks from more children participants.
        • Ketoprak Anak-Anak Cindelaras  - 2015: Supported by Indonesia's leading financial institution, Gelar produce a children's traditional drama (ketoprak) aimed at campaigning for financial literacy from an early age. In this series of performances almost all role in ketoprak is played by children. Instead of being the target of the campaign, these children performers would be agents to deliver the messages. The ketoprak drama takes the folk tale entitled Cindelaras and had been staged for three times during the period of 2015 and 2016.
